Capturing the Essence of Women’s Surfing – An Interview with Cait Miers
Share
Surf photography is more than just snapping waves—it’s about capturing the energy, movement, and spirit of the ocean. Few do this as beautifully as Cait Miers, a surf photographer known for her dreamy, sunlit images and deep connection to women’s surfing. Cait has worked with some of the most inspiring female surfers, showcasing their strength, style, and confidence in the water.
At Sea Daisie, we’re all about empowering women in the surf, so we caught up with Cait to chat about her creative process and the challenges of shooting in the water.
What’s a moment in the water that you wish you had captured but didn’t?
Hmm, there’d be many! There isn’t one in particular that springs to mind, but there have been countless times where I get out there, and the light turns on, and I’m like, damn it! haha.
What’s the biggest challenge of shooting in the water that most people don’t realize?
That everything is moving. I can’t tell you the number of people who try shooting in the water and come in saying, “Okay wow, that was hard.” There are so many things to think about, and you’re surrendering to Mother Nature—which is beautiful—but it means you have to be okay with whatever happens. In a way, it teaches you to go with the flow and marvel at the spontaneous creations it allows you to get on camera.
How do you prepare for a session when conditions are unpredictable?
It’s funny, but I’m much more chill these days about shooting in crazy conditions. I rarely shoot in the water at the moment unless it’s for a job, as I’ve got a few other projects on the go. But thankfully, when I am shooting, I have safety support in contests and the ability to say yes or no.
Do you have any pre-shoot rituals before heading into the water?
Not really, it’s more just taking quiet time to make sure everything’s correct with the housing. If I put my camera in the housing while I’m talking to people, then I’m just setting myself up for disaster. So just a bit of quiet me time is all I need before heading out. :)
What advice would you give to someone wanting to break into surf photography?
Honestly, it’s getting more and more competitive, and it’s hard to make a full-time income off it. None of us do that. We couple it with other shoots and do what we can to get by. But as a hobby, it’s so fun! Best advice is to just start. Get in there. You have to make the effort to check the surf and winds and be consistent!
What has been your favorite destination that you have traveled to date?
There have been so many, but I have a soft spot for Sri Lanka and Canada. I’m really in a transition phase with travel, trying to do less of it and build more of my home life. I’m intrigued by mountains and wandering nature at the moment, so hopefully a few destinations like that are on the cards soon.
What do you love most about being a photographer?
It’s my vehicle to express my feelings, views, and opinions of the world.
